robots.txt controls crawler access; noindex directs supported search engines not to index a page they can retrieve. Choose the control for the outcome you need instead of assuming the two are interchangeable.
What to inspect
- Decide whether the goal is limiting retrieval or excluding a page from results.
- Check the actual rules served by the production hostname.
- Do not treat robots.txt as protection for confidential information.
- Keep private account data behind authentication and authorization.
A blocked page can still be known through links. If a crawler cannot fetch the page, it cannot read that page’s noindex instruction. The combination needs deliberate handling rather than copying a generic template.
A check you can run
Use a non-sensitive test URL to inspect response headers, page directives, and crawler rules. Confirm the intended outcome in the search engine’s inspection tools when you have access.
